Life with food allergies

We're going to North Dakota for Aaron's family reunion this weekend, and Diana was thoughtful enough to plan ahead so we'll have something to eat at the pre-planned meals. I called the restaurant/hotel banquet manager in hopes of figuring something out so we're not, yet again, left to scrounge up whatever fast food joint nearest us has to offer, and this comical exchange is what ensued:

Me: We're trying to figure out a menu for Friday night. My husband is allergic to nuts and eggs, and we're vegetarians.

Her: Hmm. Well, we're a steakhouse, donchyaknow, so we have a lot of meat. Do you eat meat?

Me: No, we're vegetarians.

Her: Okay, you tell me what you eat, and we'll make that.

Me: What food do you have available? We eat everything except nuts, eggs, and meat.

Her: Well we have lots of things. Just tell me what you eat.

Me: Generally speaking, Mexican food is best.

Her: We don't serve Mexican food.

Me: Okay, we also eat a lot of vegetables, rice, beans, and lentils.

Her: We don't really have any of that. But we do have hot dogs, brats, and burgers. Youbetchya we do. Our vegetables are side dishes. We have a lot of meat. Can you do chicken breasts?

Me: No. We're vegetarians.

Her: Okay. What about pasta?

Me: We've found that a lot of times pasta has egg in the noodles. If there is no egg, we can do it, otherwise we cannot.

Her: (Asks the chef, comes back) There is milk, so that won't work.

Me: No, he's allergic to eggs, not milk.

Her: (Asks the chef again, comes back) What about steak? Oh, that's right, you don't eat meat. Well, we can certainly give you a plate of lettuce and fruit.

Me: No thanks, we'll provide our own food.

Her: Okay, I'll call you back if I think of anything. Just to clarify, you are allergic to milk and meat?

Me: Click.

Weekly Training Review: June 12 - 18

My goal this week was to do my best to train for the 5430 Amica Sprint Triathlon I was competing in this coming Sunday.  My work schedule was still a bit tight and thus had to plan my training appropriately.  Needless to say, I did not get in as much training as I wish I could have and it showed on Sunday.  My main concern was the swim, which what my major focus is this week.

6/12/11
P.M. Swim .4 Miles
I worked on my form today.  Mostly going slow, just to pinpoint my areas of mistake.

6/13/11
P.M. Swim .5 Miles
Tried to pick it up a bit, with little success.

6/15/11

We headed up to Boulder this morning.  We lucked out and scored a pretty nice room at a hotel with a nice size pool.  We checked in at the Boulder Reservoir.  That made me a bit nervous.  There were a lot of people out practicing in the reservoir and a lot of professional looking people.

P.M. Swim .2 Miles

Run the Rockies 10K and Half Marathon

We were headed up to Frisco Colorado to do some camping.  A couple days before leaving, we found out there was a 10K and a half marathon race from Copper, CO to Frisco, CO.  Since we were already heading up there, we thought it would be fun to compete in it as a family.  Aaron ran it, Terry Mach ran it and Kathy ran it.  Jenny had to stay back and watch Elias.

The start of the race was early, but the sun was up, which helped.  Jenny's cousin Anna and her boyfriend Jeff were also running the race.  We were able to meet them up at Copper first thing in the morning.  The weather worried us a bit as it started to become overcast and very windy.

Aaron was out to do very well in the half marathon and found a spot in the front for the start.  The course was a beautiful course following I-70 down from Copper into Frisco.  The first 10 kilometers was almost all downhill which made it all that more fun.  Aaron managed to run the first 10K in around 40 minutes with a pace around 6:20.  The last part of the half was a lot more flat and had many more hills.  His overall pace was 6:57 at the finish and he finished in 1:30:55.  He took 10th overall out of 300 and some and 2nd in his age division.  He was pretty upset about taking second because he got passed in the last mile and he came to find out the winner in each age division gets a new pair of Solomon shoes.

Here is picture of Elias waiting at the finish line.

Here is Aaron finishing the half marathon.  He didn't take first, but the "1" he is holding up refers to a bet he and Terry had.  Aaron bet Terry he could finish it under 1:30, but he finished it at 1:30:55.  He was yelling at Terry telling him he missed the free Mexican dinner by one minute.

Aaron and his second place medal.

Kathy was able to finish the 10K without stopping to walk once.  Terry also beat his best 10K time to date.  And since Jenny was not able to run with us, she decided she would run the path alone and see how she did.  We dropped her off up top and Terry was able to run the first couple miles with her.  She did end up finishing the 10K with her best time ever at 58:16.  Great job Jenny.

Domesticated

I've finally started to take the time to try my hand at a few more projects...here they are!
I found a tutorial for a t-shirt skirt. Thanks to T-Bone having lost roughly 40 pounds, he had plenty of extra shirts lying around for me to cut up. So I started with this...
...and ended with this:
It is SO comfy compared to other skirts I have. It ended up shrinking quite a bit in after washing, so I'll probably look for a longer t-shirt next time around.

Next I found some jersey knit fabric on clearance, so I thought I'd try to come up with something that I could wear during the summer. I didn't follow a specific pattern, instead just traced a tank onto the fabric. The end result was a racerback tank:

I like it! I'm happy with how it turned out, especially for not having a pattern. It's longer, too, so perfect with leggings:

When we went to Minneapolis at the beginning of June, my ever-creative friend Sarah had the cutest clutch - I thought she had bought it, but alas, she made it! She's a genius - she cut up an old tape measure to serve as the clasp to keep it shut tight. I made two when I got home. The first was an experiment. I had made it too small, so the tape measure wouldn't "lock" open, it kept winding shut. I ended up using velcro to clasp it shut.

It is the perfect size to hold just a few cards for a quick trip out. The second turned out much better - I used about 6 inches of tape measure on each side to clasp it shut.

It fits my wallet and keys perfectly!

Back in April, I made bibs for Elias. Every baby boy needs a nice pair of Easter bibs! They were much more difficult than I had anticipated, so my mom helped with the button holes and fastening the snaps on. Here's a shot of them from the front, a close up of the duck, and the back.

He sported them to church Easter morning, despite the snow and 30 degree weather.

The last project I took on was a car caddy for our nephew, Britton. I love, love, LOVE this project, and almost kept it for myself rather than giving it to him for his birthday. The cars roll up inside of it, so it's perfect to carry out to a restaurant or to church. I'll make Elias one when he gets a bit bigger.

Here it is rolled up...the brown strap is velcroed shut, serving as a handle

...same thing, side view
Opening it up...

Here's the back opened up

And lastly, the inside! There are spaces for six cars, then a little road for the cars to drive on. I love it!

That's it. Once the morning sickness set it, I was worthless in many ways, one of them being craftiness.

Hot, Hot, Humidity

Elias and I went to Minneapolis last weekend. We initially booked our ticket to get together with the infamous PC in celebration of Heid's upcoming wedding, and ended up scheduling a weekend full of quick visits. We spent Thursday night at Uncle Kev's. Friday Elias and I visited Kelly and Keira - my, my, how times have changed since we first met in Weible Hall 8 years ago.

Elias had a difficult time adjusting to playing with someone smaller than him. At first he thought she looked like a tantalizing treat...

...then he started to understand that she, too, was a human baby...

...and finally came to realize she's going to be his wife someday.

Here's one more shot of Elias looking adorable, despite the humidity and mosquitoes flying around us.

Next stop: cousin Hazel's. After staring intently at one another for a few moments, they eased up a bit.

We then headed over to David and Nancy's for dinner and drinks, where we met up with Matt and Kev, too.

Emily has an awesome camera. It's definitely on my want list after seeing how crisp her pictures turned out (clearly, these are hers).

Hazel is such a sweetheart. Elias cried when we left, and, although he couldn't verbally express himself, I'm confident he was sad because he won't see Hazel again for a few months.

Moving on, our next and final destination was Sarah's, where Elias got to meet his adoptive aunties.

It was great to catch up with these ladies. Although I don't get to see them often, when I do, it's as though no time has passed.

Saturday morning came too early. Matt, my mom, and I went on a run near Long Lake. Christopher McDougall, author of Born to Run, along with Scott Jurek and Eric Orton, did a quick book signing and naked run. I thought it would be an easy jog since elevation wasn't a factor - the humidity, however, was killer. I struggled. It was worth it though, as I can now say I 'went for a jog with Scott Jurek'. I like the sound of it. I think I'll say it a lot.

I made my way back to Sarah's to find Elias making his aunties work to keep him content. We went to the beach in the afternoon, where E got his first taste of swimming outdoors.

Can this kid get any cuter?

Throw that hat on him and yes, he can. On our way back to Sar's from the beach, E was sitting in his car seat and said, well-enunciated, 'Dada'. So precious. And so sad Aaron wasn't there to hear it.

Uncle Matt, Auntie Rita, and Oma then came by and picked Elias up for the night. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Elias has spent his first night apart from both mom and dad. I was nervous about it beforehand, but I can now state that that was the first of many: it was a blast. I did miss him, though. The girls forbid me from looking at pictures of him. I guess my incessant looking down at the camera, furrowing of the brows, and saying, in a whiny voice, 'Awww, isn't he adorable? I miss him,' got old. Weird.

We ate dinner on the mighty Miss, then went out near Sar's in Uptown.

Sunday morning we flew back home. Elias was excited to see Daddy pull up to pick us up.

Hopefully next time we fly somewhere, daddy will come with! Also, did I mention I went for a jog with Scott Jurek?

5/29/11
P.M. Run 3.9 Miles
Up in Frisco camping with Rob and Jenna. Rob and I were trying to keep our heart rates low. Also, we couldn't find much for trails initially and ran a lot on the banks of the lake.

P.M. Bike 15.08 Miles
Had a great ride around the lake. Someday I'll actually go around the whole lake, but it is quite the journey and I don't know if I've figured out exactly how to get around the lake.
